President Alpha Condé today welcomed as « a good start » the pledge of international funds for Ebola recovery in the three countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.
He warned, however, that if the world was serious about ending Ebola and getting affected economies back on their feet, adequate support needed to be forthcoming.
After a meeting with UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon, Condé said: « We’ve made a good start in New York. There’s clearly more to do, but we’re encouraged that the international community is mobilized and continue to highly realise the gravity of the situation in the world’s three hardest hit countries”.
« Together we’re determined that if there’s to be a legacy from Ebola it must be a positive one. Our efforts must be on ending this disease, building more robust health systems and getting our national and regional economies back on track. »
As part of the decision of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia to reinforce the regional cooperation, a special regional funds is to be created to support cross-borders projects in infrastructure, health or economic recovery – which consists of a first tangible step towards a more integrated approach and implementation at the sub-regional level.
